I provide this review for two reasons only - 1) to provide a warning to anyone looking for a church family to a problem with this church, and 2) provide another opportunity for this church to correct the wrongful treatment of us. Up until a little over two years ago, we had been active members of this church for nearly 30 years. However, that all ended whenever the elders of this church decided they would involve themselves in a dispute we had with one of our physical family members (who was not even a member of this church) regarding an estate settlement matter. The elders threatened us with disciplinary action if we did not allow them to intrude in a private family matter for which we had not asked for their assistance. In response to that threat, we informed the elders that we were leaving the fellowship of this congregation with the desire to simply depart in peace since we could not agree with their intrusion and involving themselves in this matter. We subsequently informed the congregation of our decision, intentionally not providing the reason for our leaving. Following our announcement, the elders (whose spokesman was a local judge) made a public announcement before the congregation that 1) there had been (non-specified) allegations of wrongdoing committed by us against the outsider family member who we had the dispute with, 2) that we refused to meet with the elders and the outsider together for them to determine if the allegations were true, omitting the fact that we had had multiple prior email and phone conversations with the elders declaring our innocence of any alleged wrongdoing and had been available at multiple weekly assemblies for them to talk with us in person, and 3) since we had refused to meet with them and the outsider together, the elders could not determine if the allegations were true. As a result of the above, the elders then announced they could not give us a positive referral should we seek membership elsewhere. We viewed their statements against us as 1) implied defamation of character (leading the congregation to believe we had committed wrongdoing) and 2) invasion of privacy (publicly disclosing damaging statements against someone who was no longer part of the group and who simply wanted to peacefully depart). Despite numerous pleas on our part for the elders to correct the wrongs committed against us and to reconcile, no response has to date been received other than the suggestion from one of them that we “find ourselves another church” (this despite the fact that they would not provide a positive referral). We have never heard of this cruel treatment happening to anyone. Shortly thereafter, we did “find ourselves another church”, and whenever one of the leaders of that new group contacted the elder at Glen Springs who had made the defamatory remarks, that elder confessed to him that there was no “sin” involved in our departure, which was true, but totally contradicted the basis for the disciplinary threat these elders had made against us. This church portrays an image of friendliness, family, and a desire to follow Scripture. However, it took a highly unusual situation for us to discover that it does not follow the Biblical pattern of how the first century elders conducted themselves as spiritual leaders, not domineering rulers. The leaders of this congregation in our case did not use their influence and persuasion, but rather acted as dictators, “lording it over” the congregation in violation of Mt. 20:25, Mk. 10:42-45, Lk. 22:25, and 1 Pet. 5:3. We saw a similar display of this unscriptural behavior during COVID whenever the elders unilaterally shut down the assembly, as well as unilaterally forcing a deacon to resign due to his age and then attempting to discredit me for disclosing to the congregation what the deacon personally had disclosed to me. Just as disturbing is the fact that the congregation, despite our numerous pleas to hold these men accountable for their misdeeds in accordance with 1 Tim. 5:19-20, failed to do so. We were abandoned and betrayed by this congregation.
