Our Mission

We exist to treasure Jesus Christ, to proclaim His gospel, and to love our life together in Him.
At Sovereign Grace Church of Abingdon, we are a joyful, multigenerational church family centered on Jesus Christ and shaped by His grace. We trace our roots back to the 1970s and 80s, when people with a shared passion for Jesus and a heart for God’s work in Harford County formed the local church that grew to become what Sovereign Grace Church is today. From the first day until now, we remain a church of imperfect people who have found hope and rest in Jesus, and we seek to extend that same hope to others through authentic relationships, compassionate care, and gospel centered community. Rooted in God’s Word, we preach the Bible verse by verse so that we might know Christ more deeply and follow Him more faithfully.

We started attending Sovereign Grace about 8 years ago and love it! We were immediately welcomed into the family. Solid theology, strong verse-by-verse teaching of the Bible, awesome worship and fellowship for the family. We love our church!

Together, we seek to grow in faith, care for one another, and welcome others into the life and joy found in Christ.

Gospel-Centered Community

We offer meaningful opportunities for those in every stage of life to grow in faith, build lasting relationships, and find community. From Grace Kids and Youth Fellowship to multigenerational Care Groups and men’s and women’s ministries, our ministries are designed to help people of all ages follow Jesus and experience life together in Christ.

What Shapes Our Teaching: At SGC Abingdon, our preaching is rooted in Scripture and shaped to help people understand who God is and how the Bible should shape our lives.

Expository - We aim to carefully teach through the passages of Scripture verse by verse. We emphasize the authority of Scripture and how it calls us to respond in humility and faith.

Christ-Centered - Our teaching focuses on how all of God's Word points us to Christ, invites us to treasure Him and applies to all of life.

Applicable - Messages are designed to help connect biblical truth to everyday life, relationships, and decisions.

We Love Our Community: God has placed Sovereign Grace Church in the heart of Harford County to proclaim His gospel and welcome others into the life and joy found in Christ. We love our neighbors and are committed to caring for one another and extending the hope of the gospel to our community. Through applicable preaching, genuine relationships, prayer, and practical care, we desire to be a place where people can find hope, belonging, and lasting joy in Jesus. We love our community and are grateful to serve the people who call Harford County home.

Our Core Values: These core convictions shape how we love God, care for one another, and serve our community. REFORMED Based on the Scriptures alone, we believe that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, to the glory of God alone. God has graciously chosen a people from every tribe, tongue, and nation on earth. Such marvelous mercy toward undeserving sinners like us makes us a humble and happy people, resting in God’s sovereign grace. GOSPEL-CENTERED It’s all about Jesus Christ. From beginning to end, the Bible is one big story of God’s mercy. God sent his Son, Jesus, to save all sinners who trust in him. All that we do – from our singing, to our preaching, to our life together – is our joyful response to what God has done. CONTINUATIONIST We need God’s power to point one another to Jesus and live for him. Thankfully, God himself provides this power through the Holy Spirit who lives in every believer. To this end, we believe that the Holy Spirit pours out supernatural gifts, some of which seem more ordinary, some of which seem more remarkable, all of which draw our hearts to Christ and build us up in him. COMPLEMENTARIAN God has created all people, men and women, in his image and to shine forth his glory. We celebrate God’s good design as men and women play distinct and complementary roles in the church, in the home, and in the world. This good design reflects his triune nature as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – equal in value, distinct in role. ELDER-LED Jesus is the head of his body, the Church. God shepherds his people by calling and qualifying men through character and gifting to lead the church, serving as his undershepherds in the office of elder (pastor). Our pastors are primarily members of the local church, and secondarily shepherds tasked with serving and leading the church, deeply involved in the life of the church and its members. MISSION Because God’s mission to save his people is at the heart of the Christian faith, we respond by being on mission together. We live as ambassadors of this good news, so mission is not an extracurricular activity for us, but a lens through which we see every aspect of life. Through our outreach, our prayers, and our partnership with Sovereign Grace Churches, we aim to reach both our neighborhood and the nations with the gospel. INTERDEPENDENCE The local church is a microcosm of the universal Church, which is made up of all whom Christ has saved, all over the world, and for all time. Unity among churches glorifies God and witnesses to the world. To this end, we enjoy a rich relationship with Sovereign Grace Churches, united in global mission, fellowship, and governance. We are able to do far more in partnership with our sister churches in Sovereign Grace than we ever could alone.
