My husband and I went to this church for the first time around last summer. Everyone was very kind and welcoming. Very traditional feel with the music worship and everyone’s wardrobe. Not my vibe as I like worshipping loud, but my husband really liked the people (as did I) so we went back the next week. This time, they had a Pentecostal guest speaker with the first name John (I apologize, I don’t remember his last name). The message was fine until he started talking about speaking in tongues. He claimed that “speaking in tongues should make you uncomfortable & is just making sounds” which is not supported by scripture. Speaking in tongues is a gift in which someone is able to communicate with someone in a way that the other person understands, like a language they would have no way of knowing beforehand, etc. this guest speaker had everyone in the church babble & then called teens/young adults who wanted to speak in tongues up to the front & told them to just let out their sounds & that it’s meant to feel weird & uncomfortable. I immediately turned to my husband & told him “this doesn’t feel right, speaking in tongues is a gift not learned, I don’t like this” but we stayed until the end of the message. Later on, my husband looked into what scripture says about speaking in tongues. I recommend reading 1 Corinthians 12-14 as it pertained to this topic. However, it completely contradicts the speaker’s claims. I was so angry because he was spreading false information about The Word & angry with this church for allowing him to “teach” this unbiblical nonsense (not to mention he had been a returning guest speaker). We never went back due to the unbiblical message. I strongly advise this guest speaker to get back into scripture so as not to mislead others (I’m hoping he was not intentionally misleading) & for The Door to vet their speakers & only allow sermons that are rooted in scripture.
