About Second Unitarian Church of Omaha

We are brave, curious, and compassionate thinkers and doers. We are diverse in faith, history and spirituality, but aligned in our desire to make a difference for the good. We have a track record of standing on the side of love, justice, and peace. We have radical roots and a history as self-motivated spiritual people: we think for ourselves and recognize that life experience influences our beliefs more than anything. We need not think alike to love alike. We are people of many beliefs and backgrounds: people with a religious background, people with none, people who believe in a God, people who don’t, and people who let the mystery be. We are Unitarian Universalist and Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Humanist, Jewish, Muslim, Pagan, atheist and agnostic, believers in God, and more. On the forefront of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer inclusion for more than 40 years, we are people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. We welcome you: your whole self, with all your truths and your doubts, your worries and your hopes. Join us on this extraordinary adventure of faith. Get involved!

Learning amongst UUs takes place throughout life. We are continually seeking and searching, learning and growing. Religious Education at Second Unitarian Church of Omaha is taken seriously as children, teens and adults are encouraged to learn about different spiritual practices, different religious backgrounds, our distinct Unitarian Universalist history and beliefs, and social justice. Our social justice identity is grounded in Unitarian Universalism which asks us to value all people, be ethical, work for equality, and respect the earth. We are optimistic, engaged and willing to take risks. We are willing to be public, to stand with those who are discriminated against, and engage with others as we build a community that works for all. We seek relationships, speak and gather with others, are aware of our community and have a conscience that compels us to act to make a difference in our world.” Unitarian Universalism has a legacy of “deeds not creeds” — deeds largely focused on creating a more loving, just world. Through the power of love, we work to break down divisions, heal isolation, and honor the interconnection of all life and all justice issues. Our justice initiatives focus on these key priorities: - Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer justice - Recreating community through Omaha Together One Community (OTOC) - Care for the environment - Racial justice In addition to our key priorities, our efforts more broadly include: - Serving our community by partnering with community organizations focused on justice - Participating in the Unitarian Universalist Association’s Common Read program of suggested readings on justice
We offer Sunday child care for children 3 and under. During the school year we offer Sunday school during the service. You child, however, is welcome to join you during the service, too.

BELIEFS

In Unitarian Universalism, you can bring your whole self: your full identity, your questioning mind, your expansive heart. Together, we create a force more powerful than one person or one belief system. As Unitarian Universalists, we do not have to check our personal background and beliefs at the door: we join together on a journey that honors everywhere we’ve been before. Our beliefs are diverse and inclusive. We have no shared creed. Our shared covenant (our seven Principles) supports “the free and responsible search for truth and meaning.” Though Unitarianism and Universalism were both liberal Christian traditions, this responsible search has led us to an inclusive spirituality drawn from six sources: from scriptural wisdom to personal experience to modern day heroes. Unitarian Universalists believe more than one thing. We think for ourselves, and reflect together, about important questions: The existence of a Higher Power Life and Death Sacred Texts Inspiration and Guidance Prayer and Spiritual Practices We are united in our broad and inclusive outlook, and in our values, as expressed in our seven Principles. We are united in shared experience: our open and stirring worship services, religious education, and rites of passage; our work for social justice; our quest to include the marginalized; our expressions of love.
Eternal Security: No, Can't Lose
