Our Mission

Biblically based. Culturally diverse. United in Christ.
CCSB is engaged in the work of evangelism and missions—in our backyard, across our state’s borders, and beyond the globe. Each year teams are sent around the world on short-term mission trips. Places CCSB has been to include: India, Samoa, Peru, Costa Rica, Ireland, New York, the Philippines, Mexico, Russia, Haiti, New Orleans, Maine, and Uganda, among many others. Long-Term Missionaries are also sponsored to take the message of the Gospel across the globe, as are several churches seeking and serving the Lord in distant countries such as India and Liberia. As people enter the main foyer of the church sanctuary, they will see “Great is Thy Faithfulness” painted on the arch. This serves as a constant reminder that Calvary Chapel South Bay is what it is today because of the Lord’s faithfulness. To God alone be the glory for the great things He has done! As people leave the church, on the other side of the arch, is painted, “You Are Now Entering the Mission Field”. This serves as a reminder to the church body of the calling God has placed on all of us here at CCSB. To not only take in God’s Word, but also apply it to our everyday lives. Here at Calvary Chapel South Bay we strive to not only know God but also make God known.

About Calvary Chapel South Bay

Calvary Chapel South Bay was one of the churches that resulted from the Jesus Movement. Taken quite literally from the gutter by the miraculous workings of the Lord, Pastor Steve Mays had developed a passion for the lost, and an unwavering devotion to sharing the Word of God. He became the senior pastor of CCSB in 1980. After serving over 34 years at CCSB, Pastor Steve Mays went home to be with the Lord in October of 2014. Pastor Jeff Gill became the senior pastor of Calvary Chapel South Bay on April 12, 2015. Jeff and his wife, Connie, are proving that and are facing the challenges that lie ahead as they continue to move forward down the path that God has opened for them at CCSB. Currently, Calvary Chapel South Bay has become a home church for over 8,000 people of all ages and cultures. The ministry of CCSB comprises a large variety of discipleship groups to help and encourage Christian growth and maturity in intimate settings—men’s, women’s, youth, discipleship classes and more. There are multiple opportunities to serve and make an impact as the body of Christ.

BELIEFS

We believe in the inerrancy (free from error) of Scripture, that the Bible — Old and New Testaments — is the inspired, infallible, Word of God. We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that God the Father is the personal, transcendent and sovereign Creator of all things. We believe that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully human, that He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, provided for the atonement of our sins by His substitutionary death on the cross, was bodily resurrected by the power of the Holy Spirit, ascended to the right hand of God the Father, and ever lives to make intercession for us. After Jesus ascended to heaven, He poured out His Spirit upon the believers in Jerusalem, enabling them to fulfill His command to preach the Gospel to the entire world, an obligation shared by all believers today. We believe that all people are by nature separated from God and responsible for their own sin, but that salvation, redemption, and forgiveness are freely offered to all by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. When a person repents of sin and accepts Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and Lord, trusting Him to save, that person is immediately born again and sealed by the Holy Spirit, all his/her sins are forgiven and that person becomes a child of God, destined to spend eternity with the Lord. We believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirit and that they are proven valid for today if they are exercised within Scriptural guidelines. We as believers are to covet the best gifts, seeking to exercise them in love so that the whole body of Christ might be edified. We believe that love is more important than any spiritual gift, no matter how impressive it might seem, and without love, all exercise of spiritual gifts is worthless. We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost: they that are saved unto the resurrection of life in Heaven, and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation and eternal life in Hell. We await the pre-tribulation rapture of the church, and we believe that the second coming of Christ with His saints to rule on earth will be personal, pre-millennial, and visible. We reject the idea that true Christians can be demon possessed. We reject the extreme positions of both Calvinism and Arminianism. We reject the idea of “positive confession” (a belief that God can be commanded to heal or work miracles according to man’s will or desire). We reject the idea of human prophecy, which supersedes or bypasses Scripture. We reject the incorporation of humanistic and secular psychology or philosophy into Biblical teaching. We reject the over-emphasis of spiritual gifts or experiential signs and wonders to the exclusion of Bible teaching. We believe that the only true basis of Christian fellowship is Christ’ (agape) love, which is greater than any differences we possess, and without which we have no right to claim ourselves Christians. We believe worship of God should be spiritual. Therefore, we remain flexible and yielded to the leading of the Holy Spirit to direct our worship. We believe worship of God should be inspirational. Therefore, we place great emphasis on music in our worship. We believe worship of God should be intelligent. Therefore, our services are designed with great emphasis upon the teaching of God’s Word that He might instruct us how He should be worshiped. We believe that worship of God should be fruitful. Therefore, we look for His love in our lives as the supreme manifestation that we have been truly worshipping Him. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit. By His indwelling, the Christian is enabled to live a godly life and to be a witness for Christ. We also believe that His power, gifts, and enablement are available to all believers today. We believe in the inerrancy (free from error) of Scripture, therefore our ministry emphasizes the exposition of God’s Word from Genesis to Revelation, line upon line, precept upon precept. We also seek to teach God’s Word in such a way that its message can be applied to an individuals life, leading that person to greater maturity in Christ. We believe it is important to uphold the Scriptural practices of the early church. Therefore, we hold to the practice of water baptism (immersion) and the regular taking of communion. We do not believe that either of these practices are essential for salvation, but that they serve as a demonstration of our living faith in Christ. In our services, we focus on a personal relationship with God through worship, prayer and in the teaching of the Word of God. We teach both expositionally (going through scripture line by line, studying and analyzing) and topically (building the message around a particular Scripture verse or verses). We do not allow speaking in tongues during services, nor prophecy while a Bible study is in progress because we do not believe that the Holy Spirit would interrupt Himself. We have specific “afterglow” services and believers’ meetings where these gifts of the Spirit are exercised.
