BELIEFS

Church Covenant Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God, to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord, and, on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, we do now, in the presence of God and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another as one body in Christ. We engage, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit to walk together in Christian love; to strive for the advancement of this church in knowledge, holiness, and comfort; to promote its prosperity and spirituality; to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline, and doctrines; to contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the church, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the gospel through all nations. We also engage to maintain family and secret devotions; to religiously educate our children; to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintances; to walk circumspectly in the world; to be just in our dealings, faithful in our engagements, and exemplary in our deportment; to avoid all tattling, backbiting, and excessive anger; to abstain from the sale of and use of intoxicating drinks as a beverage; to use our influence to combat the abuse of drugs and the spread of pornography; and to be zealous in our efforts to advance the kingdom of our Savior. We further engage to watch over one another in brotherly love; to remember one another in prayer; to aid one another in sickness and distress; to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling and Christian courtesy in speech; to be slow to take offense, but always ready for reconciliation and mindful of the rules of our Savior to secure it without delay. We moreover engage that when we remove from this place we will, as soon as possible, unite with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of the covenant and the principles of God's Word. Statement of Faith I. Bible - We believe the Old and New Testaments as the divinely inspired word of God, infallible in the original manuscripts, God speaking through the Holy Spirit through men to men. Therefore the Bible is from God, not from men and is the final authority in every matter of faith, principle, and practice (II Peter 1:20-21, II Timothy 3:14-17). II. Trinity - We believe, as set forth in God's Holy Word, there is one eternally existent God in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This unity is not simple but compound, the unity of the Godhead, three persons in one, same in substance, equal in power and glory; one God with three persons in the Godhead (Isaiah 48:16, Matthew 28:19, John 10:30, John 4:24, I Corinthians 8:4-6). III. Deity - We believe in the deity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (John 1:1-2, John 10:30, John 20:28-29), His shed blood for reconciliation of the guilty by divine sacrifice or atonement (Hebrews 9:12-22, II Corinthians 5:21, I Corinthians 6:11), His bodily resurrection (John 2:19-22, Acts 2:32, Acts 3:15), His ascension into heaven at the right hand of God (Mark 16:19) where He liveth to make intercession for believers, and His personal, visual, and imminent return to the earth at the end of the age (I Thessalonians 4:13-18, Revelation 19:11-16). IV. Holy Spirit - We believe the Holy Spirit is God, having the same divine attributes (Acts 5:3-4) and that He continues the work of God, revealing truth, correcting sin, regenerating through the new birth; He indwells, anoints, baptizes, guides, empowers, comforts, gives joy, gives discernment, bears fruit, gives gifts so Christians are able to live lives pleasing to God (Romans 8:11, I John 2:20, 27, John 14:16-26, Galatians 5:22-23, I Corinthians 12:5-11). V. Creation - We believe God created heaven and earth and all things therein including man, created in His image, male and female created He them. We further believe man's fall led to the depravity of the entire human race, that by his very nature, man is lost (Genesis 1:1-26, Genesis 3:6-7, Romans 3:19-23). VI. Salvation - We believe as follows: (a) The shed blood of our Lord Jesus Christ purchased our salvation at Calvary's cross. Our salvation is a free gift from God and is received at accountable age by grace through faith apart from works or any personal merit. Because of the sin of one man, Adam, we are born sinners, on our way to hell and must be born again (Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 3:23, Romans 10:9-10, John 3:7). (b) We believe that salvation is forever and the truly born again are kept by the Father for the Lord Jesus Christ (John 6:37-40, John 10:27-30, I Peter 1:5). (c) We believe our salvation is a great blessing having delivered us from sin, satan's power, the wrath to come, and eternal damnation (Matthew 1:21, Hebrews 2:15-16, Romans 5:9, John 3:16-17). (d) We believe that we have a great privilege to rejoice in the assurance of our salvation through the testimony of God's Holy Word, but God's word forbids the use of this rejoicing as an occasion to sin (Romans 13:14, Romans 6:1-4, Titus 2:11-15). (e) We are sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13). VII. Church - We believe as follows: (a) We believe it is the pillar and ground of truth, a body of born again believers called out from the world (I Timothy 3:15, Ephesians 4:17, I John 2:15-17). (b) We believe the Church is a monument of the wisdom of God (Ephesians 3:10), a group of worshippers (Philippians 3:3), a people by whom God is glorified (Ephesians 3:10), and the Church of the Living God was redeemed by Christ, belongs to Christ, and is subject to Christ (I Timothy 3:15, I Peter 1:18-19, Ephesians 5:24-26). (c) We believe the Church is an organism and it has an organization of believers as living, spiritual stones in the spiritual temple with Christ the head, the Savior, the leader and provider (Ephesians 2:20-22, Ephesians 5:24-32, II Corinthians 11:2, Revelation 19:7-8). (d) We believe the Church, under the leadership of the Holy Spirit, is answerable to Jesus Christ and in matters of membership, government, discipline, and benevolence, the will of the Church is final (Acts 2:41-42, Colossians 1:18, Ephesians 1:22-23). VIII. Lord's Supper and Baptism - We believe there are only two ordinances appointed by Christ: baptism and the Lord's Supper. (a) We believe baptism is a symbol and public confession of one's union with Christ in death, burial and resurrection, a promise to walk in newness of life and a confession of Christ as Savior and Lord. Acts 8:38-39 contains the idea of immersion. (Matthew 28:19-20, Acts 2:38, 41, Acts 10:47-48, Romans 6:3-5, I Corinthians 1:13, Galatians 3:27). (b) We believe the Lord's Supper is an ordinance instituted by Christ. It is to be observed by His followers, consisting in the spiritual partaking, by faith, of the broken body and shed blood of the Lord through the consecrated symbols of bread and wine. This is a fellowship feast that must be celebrated "till He come" (Matthew 26:26-30, Luke 22:19-20, I Corinthians 11:23-26).
