About Living Word Evangelical Lutheran Church
We are a biblical, sacramental, confessional, and historical parish serving Mission Viejo and the surrounding communities for over fifty years. We believe the Scriptures provide meaning, purpose, and balance to our lives. In them we learn who God is, who we are, why we need Him, how He loved us, and how we love one another. We learn to see the world, our lives, suffering, and joy through the lens of His cross.
We believe that the three Christian Creeds and the Book of Concord rightly teach this historic Christian faith and lead us back to Christ our Lord and Savior. He is not far away, but nearby, present in the Word and Sacraments to give us the blessings of His life and death. All social activities, gatherings, and Bible studies culminate in this Sunday Divine Service. It is reverent, beautiful, and inspiring. Our architecture, ceremonies, and dress pull our attention to Him who gave Himself for us on the cross and now gives Himself to us in Word and Sacraments. There He makes us new and then sends us back into the world as His saints eager to live for one another. As we go, He goes with us.

BELIEFS
Scriptures: The Scriptures alone are the source and foundation of faith and life. 2 Tim 3:15-17
Trinity: There is one God, yet three persons. Dt 6:4; Mt 28:19
Sin: All humans are conceived and born sinful—without love of God, without trust in God and with an inclination to sin. It is called original sin or the sinful flesh. The reason people sin outwardly is because of this flesh. Ps 51:5
Jesus: Jesus is one person with two natures inseparably united—divine and human. He did and continues to do everything as God and man. He was born of the Virgin, lived, died and rose to rid people of original sin and all other sins, and to reconcile all humans to the Father. He ascended into heaven to fill the universe and to rule all things for the good of His Church. He will come visibly on the Last Day to judge the living and the dead. Jn 1:14, 29
Salvation by faith alone: No one can be saved by their own strength, decisions, or works. But because of Christ God freely forgives and declares people righteous and innocent by grace. This is received only by faith. Ro 4:5
The Ministry: God established the Holy Ministry to give the Word and the Sacraments. For the Spirit works to create and strengthen faith in those that hear the Gospel and receive the Sacraments. 1 Co 4:1
Good Works: Faith naturally does good works from the heart and without compulsion out of love and thanks to God. Yet believers do not rely on these works to make themselves acceptable before God. Faith alone makes a person acceptable to God. Eph 2:8-10
The Church: The Church consists of all believers (saints) in heaven and on earth. On earth it is found where the Gospel is purely taught and the Sacraments rightly administered. Ro 1:16; Ga 1:8
Baptism: Baptism saves. Because infants are born sinful, they need the forgiveness God pours out in these waters. Titus 3:5-7; Acts 2:38-39
The Lord’s Supper: Christ’s true body and blood are present, distributed, and received by all who eat this Supper. The mouth receives Christ’s body and blood. Faith receives all blessings. Without faith a person eats to their judgment. 1 Co 10:16; 11:29
Worship: Primarily, believers gather around the Gospel to receive God’s gifts of forgiveness, life, and salvation. Secondarily, they serve, thank, and praise Him. The highest form of worship is to receive God’s blessings in faith. All rites and ceremonies are meant to teach this. Lk 7:36-50
