Our Mission

242OTM is a “missional community”: a family of believers who are united through Christian community around a common service and witness to a particular neighborhood or network of relationships. The participants of missional communities find their primary identity of “church” within the missional community, rather than a larger worship service or small group. In essence, this group of people becomes a close-knit spiritual family on mission together. Within this construct, we seek these characteristics: - Relationally Driven: We are Family! We live life together! - Identity in Christ: Our identity/ focus in life is found in Christ and loving others with His Love - Missionally Focused: United in purpose to take God’s love to others - Service: See a need, fill the need....wherever, whenever - Discipleship: Followers of Christ with responsibilities to Him and others - Holy Spirit Empowered: Through the full reliance on God’s power that he has equipped us with, we are led and empowered by His strength and His plans - Multiplication: The goal is not to grow large in numbers of people, but to create new expressions of community through multiplying into many missional communities

About 2:42 On the Move

242OTM seeks to follow the biblical early church as defined in the book of Acts. The number comes from Acts 2:42: “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” The term “on the move” outlines our mobile nature, both in outreaching to the community and in our changing Sunday gathering locations, and aligns with Scriptures’ definition of the church being the people, the Body of Christ, and not a building. (1 Cor. 12:12, 27; Col. 1:18)

We seek to imitate the function of the church as outlined in Scripture in the book of Acts, and the actions of the Body as defined in Scripture by Jesus Christ. 242 OTM is led by a council of elders, and conducts the functions of the church in accordance with Scripture and the leading of the Spirit through prayer. - In Acts, it is clear that the local church is led by a council of elders. At each New Testament church (singular), Paul appoints elders (plural) – Acts 14:23, Acts 20:17, James 5:14. At 242 OTM, the plurality of elders leads to a true unity of God’s purpose. It is the elders’ job to teach and tend to the flock (1 Tim. 3:2, 1 Pet. 5:1-2, Acts 20:28). The term “pastor” is used in Scripture, but means “shepherd” and is used interchangeably with elder and overseer (1 Pet. 5:1-12; Acts 20:17, 28). Scripture never defines an extra position called “pastor” and never calls for one leader of a local church - there is but one lead Shepherd, Jesus Christ (1 Pet. 5:4). The different terms in Scripture indicate various features of ministry, not varying levels of authority or separate offices. Titles such as “reverend”, and terms such as installations, seminaries, and ordinations are not scriptural and have been added by man. (In Matthew 23:8-12, Jesus specifically condemns titles, say we are all brothers.) - The qualifications of an elder are defined in Titus 1:5-9; the like-term “overseer” is defined in 1 Timothy 3:1-7. They are lifted up by the people (1 Cor. 16:15-6) and remain among the flock (1 Pet. 5:1). It is clear that church elders are men; however, though different in design and role, men and women are equal in essence, dignity and value, and the gifts given to men and women are designed to complement each other. Therefore, at 242 OTM, elder’s wives play a vital role as part of the elder team. - Therefore, 242 OTM elders are “unschooled, ordinary men” who are qualified to lead because they are called, they are courageous and they spend time with Jesus (Acts 4:13). In order to seek further wisdom, 242OTM belongs to the Alliance of Renewal Churches (ARC). The elders receive experienced counsel from leaders in the ARC who help to provide apostolic oversight to the ministry.

BELIEFS

We believe in the Gospel: the good news story of God’s mercy, grace and love that saves our broken world and delivers us into eternal joy… We believe there is one true God, who created and sustains heaven and earth, and exists as three distinct persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe that all humanity is fallen and sinful, by both birth and action, and that the just penalty for sin is physical and spiritual death. We believe that man can do no work, can take no action, that will save him from this death. We believe that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was born of a virgin, lived sinlessly as both fully human and fully God, and died as a sacrificial substitute to pay the penalty of all of our sins. We believe Jesus Christ rose from the dead, ascended into heaven and sent His Holy Spirit to earth to dwell in us and to guide us. We believe there will be a future resurrection of the dead – those who have repented of sin and turned to Jesus in faith will raised to eternal life, and those who choose to remain in sin and turn from Jesus will receive eternal damnation. We believe in the inerrant truth of the Scriptures – they are authoritative and complete. We believe the gifts of the Spirit have not ceased, and are to be eagerly desired and practiced in submission to the Spirit speaking through Scripture.
