Our Mission
UBC is an independent, Baptist Church located in the heart of Illinois. We are striving to be a burning light in Decatur, first and foremost by being zealous for the Glory of our God and by exalting his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ and him crucified. Our motivation for saturating our community with the gospel is a love for Christ and his gospel. We soundly reject the man centered theology and methods so prominent in many Baptist churches. Our goal is not to invent ways to draw a crowd, but rather feed the saints with the word of God that they may go out and be "fishers of men."
All of our worship services are age integrated, with families worshiping together and involved in church life for the glory of God, although Sunday school is separated into age appropriate classes. We have one service for the old and young, since each demographic plays a vital role in the body of Christ. The services are not stage productions or performances, but rather simple times of worship centered around preaching. Our music is God honoring, meaning it is in stark contrast with the sensual ungodly music found in most churches today, often known as "Contemporary Christian". We sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, with the emphasis on a biblical message rather than the beat.
We take the name Baptist since historically this modifier identifies a church or a person as committed to scriptural baptism and Biblical distinctives and never referred to a denomination. We stand on the same principles that many of our anabapist forefathers burned at the stake for; the final authority of the inspired and preserved Word of God , saved church membership, Baptism by immersion, independent congregational government, and separation of church and state.
As an independent Baptist church, we emphasize sound doctrine and expositional preaching, in spite of the fact that these are days Paul predicted to Timothy; "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;" I Timothy 4:3. By expositional, we mean that we approach the Bible to find out what it says, rather than to back up what we already want to say. All though there is a place for topical preaching, going through the scriptures verse by verse will feed the people of God and cause them to grow spiritually. We use the Authorized Version of the Bible (KJV) for all preaching and teaching.
