About West Paris Baptist Church

Our website can be found at: (www.westparisbaptistchurch.org) . West Paris Baptist Church was organized on July 7, 1829. The members wanted a Free Will Baptist Church closer to home. They were members of a Baptist Church in Sumner. The 15 mile trip was difficult, especially in Maine winters. The Church building was built in 1866 and was dedicated in 1867. A basement with fellowship hall, kitchen and bathroom, was added in the 1960's. An addition with two Sunday School rooms was built in the 1980's. A Sunday School room and office were built in the basement in 2008. Numerous improvements and remodeling projects have been done over the years, such as an office for the Pastor, the addition of a second bathroom, a lift chair for handicapped persons, and cushions on the pews. The coming of the railroad shifted the center of commerce from North Paris to West Paris in the 1800's and promoted modest prosperity as several mills located in West Paris and mines opened in the area. Closing of the mines and mills in the mid and late 1900's led to relative poverty, with few jobs available in town. Most people who have jobs commute to South Paris, Auburn/Lewiston or Portland.

BELIEFS

The Bible All scripture is God breathed, and the infallible word of God (2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21) and good for the equipping of the saints to all good works. The Trinity God eternally exists as one but in three persons who are the Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Genesis 1:1,26; Matthew 28:19; John 1:1,2; 4:24; Acts 5:3,4; Romans 1:20; Ephesians 4:5-6; 2 Corinthians 13:14). Jesus Christ Jesus is fully God and fully man. He came to earth, was conceived of a virgin and lived a sinless life. He died and rose again to reconcile all people to God and to free them from the power of sin and the devil. He will return someday as scriptures proclaim and consummate the building of his Kingdom. All who are his shall reign with him. All who reject him shall suffer eternal destruction (Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 1:26-38; Romans 9:5; Titus 2:13). The Fall of Humanity All people are sinners and need to have a saving relationship with God. People are made children of God when they repent of their sin, are born again, and commit their life to Jesus (Genesis 1:26,27; 3:1,24; John 3:1-21; Romans 3:25; 5:12-18; 1 John 1:8). The Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit continually draws believers closer to God, changing them to be more Christ like, empowering them for ministry, and distributing spiritual gifts to the Church. Believers are to always seek in being filled with the Holy Spirit. (John 16:5-15; Romans 8:16, 23, 26, 27; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31). Baptism and Communion Baptism and communion are two sacraments the Lord has given to the Church. (Baptism: Acts 2:38-41; Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 8:26-40; 10:47; 18:8; Romans 6:3-4. Communion: Acts 2:42-46; 1 Corinthians 11:23-29). The One Universal Church There is only one Universal Church of Jesus Christ, but having many diverse expressions,. It consists of all who have a relationship with Jesus. The purpose of the Church is to use every possible means to advance the Kingdom of God. (Romans 12:4-6; 1 Corinthians 12:4-6; Ephesians 2:19-22; 4:12-16; Hebrews 10:24-25). The Blessed Hope In The Rapture of the Church Jesus as promised in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 will return one day for His bride calling first those in the grave and then those who are alive will be called to the clouds to meet in the air with our Lord being with Him always.
