Our Mission

As a large church you will find a great diversity of beliefs among our members and those who attend our church. However, as a Presbyterian church we find the roots of our faith in the Reformed Tradition and we work out the details of our faith in connection with each other looking foremost to the authority of God’s Word to us revealed in scripture. Presbyterians are distinctive in two major ways. We adhere to a pattern of religious thought known as Reformed theology and a form of government that stresses the active, representational leadership of both ministers and church members. pcusasealAs a church within the PC(USA) denomination we look to the historic Creeds, Confessions and Catechisms presented in the PC(USA) Book of Confessions – The Nicene Creed, the Apostles’ Creed, the Scots Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism, the Second Helvetic Confession, the Westminster Confession, the Westminster Shorter Catechism and the Westminster Larger Catechism, the Theological Declaration of Barmen, the Confession of 1967, and A Brief Statement of Faith. The Reformed understanding of the church’s confessional and theological tradition sees contemporary Christians as participants in an enduring theological and doctrinal conversation that shapes the patterns of the church’s faith and life. Communities of believers from every time and place engage in a continuous discussion about the shape of Christian faith and life, an exchange that is maintained through Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. These confessions do not serve as our ultimate rule of faith, that is the place of God’s Word in Scripture, but instead guide and direct our discussions as the historic witness of the believers who have come before us. FCimageWe are also a member congregation of the Fellowship Community. The Fellowship Community is a network of churches and leaders called together to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ by growing in Christ’s likeness, living by God’s word, and joining in God’s mission in the world. In 2013 the session of the church voted to join what was then known as the Fellowship of Presbyterians as a way of partnering with other congregations to better serve the Church and our community. Since then we have joined with other local churches in our area as part of a Mission Affinity Group to share best practices and support each other in our shared mission. The Fellowship Community identifies Essential Tenants that guide us as we seek to do ministry together. These Essential Tenants are not binding upon members but serve to create a common understanding of what we hold to be important in our life together. Though we as a church at times disagree about issues of theology, faith and practice, we seek to disagree in a way that is loving and respectful while we hold fast to that which unites us, Jesus Christ. We seek to create a community where humility is genuine, radical life change is expected, spiritual growth and transformation is celebrated, and prayer and worship are central. We need to be part of a community that is not about us except to help us be our best as we love, serve, and influence the world around us.
