About Plain Church
Established in 1835.
178 yrs ago on Dec. 5, 1835, 13 persons formed a union that was the beginning of Plain Church. They were sent to the area by the American home missions. They first established themselves along the Maumee River, to teach the Indians camped there. According to arrangements of a few scattered brethren in Plain and vicinity, a meeting was appointed and brethren convened at the house of Mr. Jacob Minton near the center of town on the 27th of November, 1835, 2 o'clock pm." These words come from the first records of Plain Congregational Church. These men and women gathered to consider "evidence of their personal piety" (they wanted to carefully examine the condition of their hearts and lives) and articles of faith (their shared religious beliefs). Their decision was to "assume covenant relations by organization of a church." This small group formed what became known as Plain Congregational Church.
