About The Word Church

It is often said that there is no perfect church, or that if you find one don’t join it, because you will mess it up. However, The Word Church is the Perfect Church for Not So Perfect People. The purpose of The Word Church, in common witness with all the other churches of Christ, is to proclaim and bear witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our distinctive identity is expressed as we proclaim Jesus Christ, as God’s Son and the only hope of redemption to every person in every culture, and nation as the Redeemer, the Lord, the Sanctifier, the Healer, and the Liberator. We are a people of extravagant welcome… We welcome all people, as God has welcomed us; those with a strong faith, those with little faith and those with no faith at all; GED’s and Ph.D.’s, wealthy and poor, casually dressed or Sunday’s best all worship, work and witness as a community of faith. That’s the first thing you should know about The Word Church. We’re not afraid of your past experiences or your present struggles. We’re not scared of your questions or your doubts. We all have questions and can grow together as a community of faith. …We are devoted followers of Jesus We believe in and follow Jesus exclusively and proactively proclaim him as the Christ; the Son of the living God; who is large enough, wide enough, and powerful enough to handle your past, your present, your questions, your doubts, and your future with certainty. Jesus alone is our Lord, Sanctifier, Redeemer, Healer and Liberator. For us, the most remarkable thing about God’s love is that it transforms the human experience… God extents love to us to the point that when we failed to please God in our behaviors, living and activities God still loved us and revealed grace to us through Jesus Christ, God’s Son. … And what can separate us from God’s love? Faith is a journey, and on this journey we all will run into some obstacles that will cause us to become weak in our faith; but as Gracie Allen once said “Never place a period where God has placed a comma.” We are a journeying community… At The Word Church, we believe that “No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you're welcome here!” We are a Common Witness congregation: Disciples of Christ, Evangelical Anglican and Reformed!

BELIEFS

We believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, and proclaim him as Lord and Savior of the World. The God we Praise we believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three Persons: revealed as Father, Spirit and Son, creator, sustainer the One whose Kingdom has no end. The Christ we Preach we believe in the deity of Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, and in His ascension to the right hand of the Father. The Scriptures we Teach we believe the Scriptures to be the inspired and authoritative Word of God, our only authority for faith, practice and Missional living. God continues to speak to us through the Bible, and we are devoted to the study of the scriptures for discerning God’s will for our lives. The Spirit that Empowers us we believe that for the salvation of lost and sinful humanity, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential and one baptism for the remission of sin. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling the believer is enabled to live a sanctified life and through the Spirit’s baptism we are added to the one Body of Christ, the baptism in the Holy Spirit as an endowment of power for all believers. This baptism results in a deeper expression of spiritual fruit, a greater growth in Christ-likeness, a genuine manifestation of spiritual gifts, and a more effective prayer life. The Holy Spirit is available to all people and responsible for the inspiration and energy to accomplish all things within the church. The Spirit bestows gifts upon each believer to serve this world and make disciples. The Faith we live out We believe that Communion and Baptism are sacraments of the church instituted by our Lord Jesus Christ. Giving of contributions for the implementation and sustaining of ministry is essential to fulfill the mission of God. We called to be a prophetic voice and embodiment of God’s restorative justice; as in the tradition of the prophets and apostles, God calls the church to speak truth to power, liberate the oppressed, care for the poor and to minister to the lost, less fortunate and least of these. The body we a part of we believe in the universal church, a living spiritual body of which Christ is the head and all regenerated persons are members. We believe in the local church, consisting of a company of believers in Jesus Christ, baptized on a credible profession of faith, and associated for worship, work, and fellowship. We believe that God has laid upon the members of the local church the primary task of giving the gospel of Jesus Christ to a lost world. The God who Reigns in power and majesty we believe in His personal return in power and glory; and that Jesus Christ is our Lord, Savior, Sanctifier, Healer, Liberator and soon Coming King. The Kingdom we await we believe in the resurrection of both the redeemed and the lost, they that are redeemed unto the resurrection of life in the eternal Kingdom of God and they that are lost unto the resurrection of eternal damnation separated from God for all eternity.
