Our Mission

Legacy Church began having Saturday services in 2008. Many of our folks still enjoy worshiping on Saturday and sleeping in on Sunday but in October of 2011, we added a Sunday morning service. Legacy continues to grow with our duplicate services on Saturdays at 5:00 PM and Sunday at 10:00 AM. Pastor John Rea has a vision to develop a church who can effectively meet the needs of their members through close-knit fellowship, interactive worship and intimate discipleship opportunities. Who we are can best be described from the heart of our pastor… Acts 26:18 says, “‘I’m sending you off to open the eyes of the outsiders so they can see the difference between dark and light, and choose light, see the difference between Satan and God, and choose God. I’m sending you off to present my offer of sins forgiven, and a place in the family, inviting them into the company of those who begin real living by believing in me.’ This verse is an excellent summary of the kind of church Legacy strives to be. There are many people wandering around in darkness with no knowledge of the meaning of true life, a life based on Jesus Christ. To quote Howard Hendricks, “In a world screaming for answers, the church is stuttering.” Legacy Church wants to do its part in clearly communicating the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The purpose of Legacy Church is to help people begin “real living” by coming to know Jesus Christ. Our Mission Statement is “Living life-change through Jesus Christ.” We want to live our lives in such a way that people see Christ in us, giving them hope for a life-change themselves. We seek to show the love of Christ in everything we do and in our response to all life offers us. We want people who come into our church service to feel like they have come back home. We want people who come into our presence to encounter people whose WALK matches their TALK. It’s our goal to help people connect with Christ and connect with other people so they can experience true biblical community. One of the key phrases I hear used to describe Legacy Church is “family.” And we truly believe that’s what we are. Legacy’s Vision Statement reads: “Offering hope in all aspects of life to everyday people.” Legacy Church seeks to reach our community by helping meet the real needs of everyday people. Some of the ways we do this is by offering a community food pantry, providing school supplies to children in a local school and providing Christmas through our Angel Tree each year. We don’t want to just “do” church, we want to “be” the church. We want to be more than a place where we gather for an hour a week, we want to be a lighthouse of truth in a dark world. As we continue this journey, we will always welcome new people to join this vision with us. My prayer is that YOU will come along and join us!

BELIEFS

In essential beliefs — we have unity. “There is one Body and one Spirit.., there is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of us all...” Ephesians 4:4-6 In non-essential beliefs — we have liberty. “Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters... Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls... So then each of us will give an account of himself to God... So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God.” Romans 14:1,4,12,22 In all our beliefs — we show charity. “…If I hold in my mind not only all human knowledge but also the very secrets of God, and if / have the faith that can move mountains — but have no love, / amount to nothing at all.” 1 Corinthians 13:2 (Ph) THE ESSENTIALS WE BELIEVE: ABOUT GOD God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He is holy, just, righteous, and loving. He has eternally existed in three personalities: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God. Genesis 1:1,26-27, 3:22; Psalm 90:2; Matthew28:19; 1 Peter 1:2; 2 Corinthians 13:14 ABOUT JESUS CHRIST Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is co-equal with the Father. Born of a virgin, Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to Heaven’s glory and will return again someday to earth to reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Matthew 1:22, 23; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-5; 14:10-30; Hebrews 4:14-15; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 1:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Timothy 6:14-15; Titus 2:13 ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT The Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the Son of God. He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth and guidance in doing what is right. He gives every believer a spiritual gift when they are saved. As Christians, we seek to live under His control daily. 2 Corinthians 3:17; John 16:7-13, 14:16-17; Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 2:12, 3:16; Ephesians 1:13; Galatians 5:25; Ephesians 5:18 ABOUT THE BIBLE The Bible is God’s Word to us. It was written by human authors under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. Because it is inspired by God, it is the truth without any mixture of error. 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21; 2 Timothy 1:13; Psalm 119:105,160, 12:6 ABOUT HUMAN BEINGS People are made in the spiritual image of God, to be like Him in character. People are the supreme object of God’s creation. Although every person has tremendous potential for good, all of us are marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called “sin.” This attitude separates people from God and causes many problems in life. Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6a; Romans 3:23; Isaiah 59:1-2 ABOUT SALVATION Salvation is God’s free gift to us, but we must accept it. We can never make up for our sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God’s offer of forgiveness can anyone be saved from sin’s penalty. When we turn from our self-ruled life and turn to Jesus in faith, we are saved. Eternal life begins when one receives Jesus Christ into his/her life by faith. Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 14:6, 1:12; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26; Romans 5:1 ABOUT PRIESTHOOD OF BELIEVERS Every believer is assured direct access to God through Christ alone. No intermediary stands between the believer and Christ. With direct access comes the opportunity for any believer to read and interpret the Bible under the illumination of the Holy Spirit. Each believer is to use this privilege to minister to others in Christ’s name. Every believer is a minister. 1 Timothy 2:5; John 14:6; Exodus 19:6, 23:22; 1 Peter 2:5; 1 Peter 2:9; Hebrews 7:25; Hebrews 4:16 ABOUT ETERNAL SECURITY Because God gives us eternal life through Jesus Christ, the true believer is secure in that salvation for eternity. If one has been genuinely saved, one cannot “lose” it. Salvation is maintained by the grace and power of God, not by the self-effort of the Christian. It is the grace and keeping power of God that gives us this security. John 10:29; 2 Timothy 1:12; Hebrews 7:25, 10:10, 14; 1 Peter 1:3-5 ABOUT ETERNITY People were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is Hell. To be eternally in union with Him is eternal life. Heaven and Hell are real places of eternal existence. John 3:16; John 14:17; Romans 6:23; Romans 8:17-18; Revelation 20:15; 1 Corinthians 2:7-9 WHAT WE BELIEVE ABOUT... Missions Realizing that the cause of Christ extends beyond any one local fellowship, we commit ourselves to an ongoing ministry of extending the call of Christ to make disciples around the world (Matthew 28:19-20). Assimilation and Church Membership We believe in the importance of serving the body of Christ by offering clear paths for people to start and develop healthy and growing relationships with others in the church body. We value an intentional plan to help every interested person enjoy godly relationships in the church. Church membership is a byproduct of people who are growing in Christ and who grasp the importance of serving the Lord by using their gifts to serve others in the local church. Baptism and Communion Baptism and communion are the two ordinances required in the church. We believe that Christian baptism by immersion in water is a public identification with Jesus Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection. Although baptism is not required for salvation, it is commanded of all believers and is for believers only (Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 2:38, 41; Acts 18:8). Scripture shows that a person was baptized after personally receiving forgiveness of sin through accepting Jesus Christ. The waters of baptism are a symbol of our death, burial, and resurrection to newness of life that happens when we become new creations in Christ (Colossians 2:12; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Romans 6:1-4). Communion is the commemoration by believers of Christ's death, and a reminder—through the bread and the juice—of the Savior's broken body and shed blood. Communion is to be a time of confession of our sin and should be preceded by careful self-examination according to Acts 4:13; Romans 6:3-6;1 Corinthians 11:20-29. Charismatic Movement Legacy Church is a non-charismatic, conservative, evangelical fellowship affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, the South Carolina Baptist Convention, and the Waccamaw Baptist Association. We welcome all who know Jesus Christ as their Savior and all who are seeking Him. Those who claim to possess the gift of tongues and other sign gifts are welcome to worship and fellowship with us if they are willing to be a source of unity rather than division within our church body. We believe that the Christian life is supernatural and that the Lord continues to perform miracles. We also believe that current displays of the gift of tongues distract from the main task of the local church, which is to glorify God through the fulfillment of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). Current displays of the gift of tongues: Give unwarranted prominence to the gift, which is described in the New Testament as being only one of many spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12). Emphasize speaking in tongues as the primary manifestation of the Spirit's work in a person's life, while minimizing the Spirit's work in producing a holy life (2 Corinthians 3:17-18;2 Timothy 1:9), and a life that displays the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). Often suggest that speaking in tongues is a required proof of being Spirit-filled or of possessing salvation in Christ, even though the Scriptures do not teach this. Legacy Church seeks to prevent the propagation of doctrines that would cause divisions within an individual church. Therefore, members of and adherents of Legacy Church are not to propagate the teachings and emphases of the current charismatic movement. Although we do not control personal, individual interactions with the Lord, the expression of tongues and other sign gifts are not to be overtly expressed at meetings that are under the organization and authority of Legacy Church. Statement on Marriage, Gender, and Sexuality We believe that God wonderfully and immutably creates each person as male or female. These two distinct, complementary genders together reflect the image and nature of God. (Gen 1:26-27.) Rejection of one’s biological sex is a rejection of the image of God within that person. We believe that the term “marriage” has only one meaning: the uniting of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union, as delineated in Scripture. (Gen 2:18-25.) We believe that God intends sexual intimacy to occur only between a man and a woman who are married to each other. (1 Cor 6:18; 7:2-5; Heb 13:4.) We believe that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity be engaged in outside of a marriage between a man and a woman. We believe that any form of sexual immorality (including adultery, fornication, homosexual behavior, bisexual conduct, bestiality, incest, and use of pornography) is sinful and offensive to God. (Matt 15:18-20; 1 Cor 6:9-10.) We believe that in order to preserve the function and integrity of Legacy Church as the local Body of Christ, and to provide a biblical role model to the Legacy Church members and the community, it is imperative that all persons employed by Legacy Church in any capacity, or who serve as volunteers, agree to and abide by this Statement on Marriage, Gender, and Sexuality. (Matt 5:16; Phil 2:14-16; 1 Thess 5:22.) We believe that God offers redemption and restoration to all who confess and forsake their sin, seeking His mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. (Acts 3:19-21; Rom 10:9-10; 1 Cor 6:9-11.) We believe that every person must be afforded compassion, love, kindness, respect, and dignity. (Mark 12:28-31; Luke 6:31.) Hateful and harassing behavior or attitudes directed toward any individual are to be repudiated and are not in accord with Scripture nor the doctrines of Legacy Church. Worship The chief purpose of mankind is to glorify God by loving Him with the entire heart, soul, mind, and might (Deuteronomy 6:5; Isaiah 43:7; Matthew 22:37). All believing men, women, and children are to glorify God and thus fulfill the purpose of their existence. Worship glorifies God through adoration (Psalm 95:6), praise (Psalm 99:5), prayer (Daniel 6:10-11), thanksgiving (Nehemiah 12:46), and a complete yielding to Him (Romans 12:1). Worship declares His worth, pays Him homage, and celebrates Him in a life of devotion. We seek to worship the Lord in spirit and in truth (Exodus 15:1-21;2 Samuel 6:14-16; Psalm 5:7; John 4:23-24; Revelation 4:11; 5:12). Several tenets guide our worship. We seek to: Lift high the name of Jesus Christ (John 4:22-26;John 12:32; John 14:6). Lead God's people to lift their hearts and voices to Him, giving Him praise and thanks in music and lyrics (Nehemiah 12:45-46;Psalm 66:1-4; Psalm 95:1-2). Prepare hearts to hear the Lord speak through the proclamation of Scripture (Psalm 95:6-9;Matthew 28:19-20;Acts 2:41-42). Emphasize fresh and contemporary expressions while retaining traditional elements that recognize the richness of our heritage in the faith (Deuteronomy 32:7;Psalm 33:3; Isaiah 46:8-9; Matthew 13:32, Ephesians 5:19; Revelation 5:9). Pursue excellence in worship, knowing that God is worthy of our best (Exodus 12;Deuteronomy 17:1; Psalm 33:3; 1 Timothy 4:14-15; Hebrews 11:4).
